Afghanistan has announced the closure of its embassy in New Delhi. For this, Afghanistan has cited ‘change in policy’ as the reason.
Afghanistan said in a note, ‘This decision has become effective from November 23, 2023, due to the continuous challenges coming from the Indian government. This decision has been taken after the embassy decided to stop the operation on September 30. Then we had expressed the hope that the attitude of the Government of India would be in our favor and the mission would be able to operate normally.
Operations were stopped on October 1
On September 30, the Afghanistan Embassy had announced to stop the operation from October 1, citing ‘lack of support from the host country government’ and reduced number of resources and personnel as the reasons for this.
Relief not received even after waiting – Afghanistan
Afghanistan said that despite 8 weeks time, the Indian government did not take any steps regarding the visa extension of the officials. Nor was there any change in the attitude of the Indian Government.
However, Afghanistan acknowledged that India has been a strategic partner of Afghanistan since 2001. Afghanistan said in the note, ‘We understand the compulsions of politics in today’s world and the need for balancing in a geo-politically sensitive region. Therefore, at this time it is in our best interest for Afghanistan to close the embassy.
