To curb the import of poor-quality goods in the country and to promote domestic manufacturing, the government will soon issue 65 Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for 500 products.
Sanjeev, Joint Secretary, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) said that through these orders, consumers will get safe products. Under these orders, any products that do not have the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark will not be able to be produced, sold, traded, imported and stored.
65 QCOs for more than 500 products
He said, ‘We are bringing about 65 QCOs, which include more than 500 products. QCOs are benefiting consumers and reducing substandard imports. These orders are already applicable for smart meters, nuts, bolts and fasteners.
Provision has also been made for strict action against those who violate these orders. If caught for the first time, a jail term of 2 years or a fine of up to Rs 2 lakh will be imposed, which will increase to Rs 5 lakh the next time.
QCOs help prevent imports of substandard products, prevent unfair trade practices, and ensure the safety and well-being of consumers as well as the environment.
