At least 103 people have died and a large number of people have been injured in two bomb blasts in Iran. These blasts took place near the cemetery where a ceremony was being organized on the fourth death anniversary of former Iranian general Qasem Soleimani. General Qasim Sulemani was killed in a US drone strike in neighboring Iraq in 2020.
State media Irib said the blasts took place at a procession near the Saheb al-Zaman mosque in the southern city of Kerman, the BBC reported. It quoted the deputy governor of Kerman as saying that it was a “terrorist attack”. According to the information, thousands of people were present in the cemetery in this program.
According to the Guardian, witnesses initially said there were two explosions 10 minutes apart in the south-central city of Kerman, while some reports said there were four separate explosions.
Initially, local officials said it was not known whether the explosions were caused by gas canisters or suicide bombers. Officials later said that the explosions were caused by two bombs that were detonated remotely.
At present it is being called a terrorist attack. Suicide attacks are not common in Iran, and it was not immediately clear whether the attack was carried out by a domestic group or on Israeli instructions.
