What did PM Modi say?
When Diamond Bourse was ready in July, PM Modi tweeted that Surat Diamond Bourse reflects the dynamism and development of Surat’s diamond industry. This is also proof of India’s entrepreneurial spirit. It will serve as a hub of trade, innovation and collaboration, boosting our economy and creating employment opportunities.
Historically, due to its proximity to the Arabian Sea coast, Surat was one of the most important trade links between India and countries like Britain, the Netherlands and Portugal. However, due to the flourishing of Bombay in the 17th and 18th centuries, it replaced Surat. Its diamond industry began operations about six decades ago and gained momentum following India’s economic reforms in the 1990s.
In fact, due to Mumbai’s better connectivity with the world, it has become a business center. The industry suffered a major setback following the exodus of workers from Surat following the outbreak of pneumonic plague in the city in 1994.
